My brother
Pfc. Charles S. Walsh

Charles and several of his buddies from
Roxborough High School, Philadelphia, Pa.
enlisted in the Marines in 1967.  He stopped home
briefly before shipping out to Vietnam in December.
That was the last time I would ever see my brother.
His name is located on panel 44E, line 62 of the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in
Washington, DC.
He served with K Co, 3rd BN, 9th Marines,
3rd Marine Division (REIN) FMF and was
a 3.5 rocket team leader for the
3rd platoon of Company K.

On March 15, 1968 Company K was conducting a search and destroy operation
North West of Ca Lu combat operating base, Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.
At 1:30 P.M. the company was taken under enemy sniper fire.  They called in mortar support.
Charles received multiple shrapnel wounds in the back and sides from friendly 4.2 mortars.
He was treated in the field by a corpsman and evacuated by helicopter to
the medical facility at Company D, 3rd Medical Battalion, Dong Ha, RVN, where he
received further medical treatment.  He failed to respond and died of his wounds at
6:25 P.M. on March 15, 1968.

Combat history:
Dec. 20, 1967 - Mar 15, 1968 - operations against
the Viet Cong in the vicinity of Dong HA, RVN.
Dec 20, 1967 - Jan 20, 1968 - Operation Lancaster I.
Jan 21, 1968 - Mar 15, 1968 - Operation Lancaster II.,
Valentine's Ridge ( received shrapnel wounds on Feb 14th)

Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal
