Prior to the start of construction, a major effort was launched to attain the identification of those whose name were to be placed on the Memorial. Contact was effected with over 700 Next of Kin.
Instead of the original 1009 names with which the Commission had as a start, the listing grew to the current number of 1046 names now inscribed alphabetically on the Memorial. Formal records reflect that of the women who were killed in Vietnam, none were from the State of Maryland.
In addition to the financial contributions of corporations, and citizens, the Maryland General Assembly approved and provided funds equaling $2,250,000 for the construction of the memorial - thus making the Memorial a contribution from all citizens of Maryland as a tribute to all Marylanders who served in Vietnam.
Vietnam Veterans and their families can take special pride in the knowledge that this Memorial, conceived by few, and erected by many, will stand as a humble and simple tribute to all who served their country, their State, and their fellow citizens with honor.
The Citizens of Maryland are grateful for those who served.
