Motorcycle Poker Run and Car Show Come up Aces.
Thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts and custom car aficionados gathered 'round the 451 flags on Sunday August 3rd, to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Second Annual VVA Poker Run and Classic Car Show.
Approximately 140 motorcyclists traveled 90 scenic miles through rolling Baltimore and Harford Counties, to earn the privilege of drawing five cards for the best and worst poker hands. Mr. Norman Parris came up the winner, with a full house(queens & tens), and 5 other contestants were awarded prizes.
In the Bike Show conducted by the Baltimore Ramblers, 30 trophies were given out in a wide variety of categories, while in the rodeo, laughs galore were distributed by the Weenie Bite, Water Race, and Jousting contest.
The Custom Car Show, held for the first time in the adjacent field, proved a feast for the eyes and a tribute to American's boundless love the the automobile. From vintage Plymouth to classic Corvette, each of the 125 entries reflected the deep devotion of it's owner, and the premier organizing abilities of the Maryland Street Survivors Club.
Though thirteen different categories of vehicles garnered prizes, all of them stood as winners to the crowd Additionally, two military Humvees drew keen attention, as a task force led by our own Sgt. Major John Averella sought young and veteran recruits for the Army Reserve.
With 45 colorful vendors, five bands, WQSR Radio, and a dizzying array of wildly garbed characters, the crowd easily kept busy throughout the day. The Honor Guard provided excellent security under the supervision of Cpt. Feehley, and the indefatigable Bill Kirts signed up nine new members for VVA Chapter 451.
Chef Ra'mon and his tireless kitchen crew served the multitude of volunteers a delicious breakfast and lunch, and product sales kingpin John Bartkowiak did a bristling business, ably assisted by our lively Associates.
Last but not least, the most special debt of gratitude goes to economics impresario Vince Lombardo, and his Executive Director, Thom Shea. Their devotion to duty, countless hours, unbelievable energy, and out-of-pocket expense money made this extravaganza a success for the entire community, and a special source of pride to the Vietnam Veterans of America.
